Tomorrow, September 1st, we are kicking off the celebration of Organic Month here at your organic headquarters, Natural Grocers, by giving every customer* an organic apple in a small reusable bag! Not only are apples a great addition to a school lunch box, a wonderful teacher appreciation treat, and an icon of fall, they are also one of the most important produce items to choose organic.
From 2010 to 2015 apples held the top spot on the dirty dozen list put out by the Environmental Working Group. While that might sound like an honor, the path to the top of this list is paved with herbicide and pesticide residues. This year apples dropped to the number two position, after tests showed they have the second highest levels of pesticide and herbicide residues after strawberries. Not only are quantities of pesticides and herbicides found on apples high, but many varieties–up to 42 different pesticides–have been found. Most of these pesticides have been shown to be neuroendocrine disruptors, upsetting the balance in the brain and hormonal systems of the body. Studies indicate that children are particularly sensitive to these residues, so choosing organic apples is especially important for pregnant women and children. Add in all the unknowns leading to health concerns about the non-browning GMO Arctic® Apple, and we have one more reason to choose organic (because organic produce is always GMO-free!).
Organic apples are a great choice for health. The synergy of nutrients in apples, including fiber, phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals, has been shown to support cardiovascular health, healthy blood cholesterol levels, healthy blood sugar levels, and the growth of healthy bacteria in the digestive tract, and they can even help manage hunger. How do you like them apples?
So, don’t hold back- eat that apple a day, as long as it’s organic!
What is your favorite use for apples? Do you have any preferred varieties? Share your favorite apple inspirations in the comments section below for all to enjoy.
