St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) is native to Europe but now grows wild throughout the world. It is so named because it produces its bright yellow flowers near June 24th, the day Christians celebrate the feast of St John. (The word wort simply means plant in Old English.) St John’s wort has a long and colorful history of use.
